Sunday, 1.00pm, 21st August - Tango Marathon
Our trendsetting opening event, which we created some years ago, so that we can have fun on the streets of beautiful Budapest and at the same time sell the festival to the media. The Marathon is a sightseeing tour built into half a day of street tango. We tango around several sights in downtown Budapest - followed by large flock of locals, tourists, some TV guys and photographers hooked by the sight.
We dance tango at several picturesque open air locations in downtown Budapest during the day. There are some people who can't get to the festival itself but they come here for this event specifically as a weekend excursion from the far side of Europe.
The Tango Marathon is free for everyone.
It starts at 1.00pm, right after and early lunch and finishes at dusk. But you don't have to stop dancing: the evening milonga starts shortly afterwards...
You'll find the detailed timetable (so you can join us mid-way) and final locations in the full programme downloadable on the 'home' page (after 15 August).
Sunday, 21st August - Milonga Margitsziget
The opening milonga of the festival will located on the Margaret Island (or Margitsziget) at a popular and traditional place of the nightlife in Budapest, the Grill Restaurant and Café 'Holdudvar'. The first known data about the history of the place go back to the 13th century. Even in the middle of the 19th century ruins of a Johannite castle were to be found at this place. These ruins themselves were built on the ruins of an even older castle from the Roman times. Nice history for a café, no?
The Holdudvar is not just an oversized bar with a nice garden, they also have terrace grill, cocktails and desserts. You can always come here for a home made lemonade in the afternoons too.
Picking up where the Tango Marathon left off, the opening milonga on the Island will start at 10 pm. The DJ for the evening is Antónia Nagykáldi, or Toncsi (pronounce: 'tonchee'), live music will be provided by Cortina, an contemporary tango formation. There is no address. Really. Between Pest and Buda, on Margitsziget, in the middle of a wonderful park you will find the place called 'Holdudvar'. If you walk in from Margit-híd (the Southern bridge) you'll walk straight into it (make sure not to fall into the fountain though).
Toncsi is one of the regular DJs of Danubiando. She plays traditional tandas, which will be contrasted by Cortina playing modern and alternative tangos.
Tango Cortina is the only neotango band in Hungary. They play at neo/alterlongas, and give concerts for non-dancers too. Their repertoire consist mostly of covers of major hits by Narcotango, Otros Aires, Gotan Project, Bajofondo, Federico Aubele and others.
Monday, 22nd August - Milonga Colombus
The Monday milonga will take place again in the center of the city, on a boat anchored at the most beautiful spot in the city, with a view anybody would kill for: Danube, the Castle of Buda, the Chain Bridge and you can see the fortress and the Statue of Liberty on Gellért Hill as well.
The Divertango Trio started its career as an ad-hoc duo of two tango musicians (each with a different orchestra), later joined by a double bass player with background in jazz and classical music. Their international debut was during Danubiando 2010, where they played right before the concert of Otros Aires.
Francois Chaix is our 'French Hungarian' DJ. He is living in Hungary for several years now, a popular figure of the tango community in Budapest.
The location debuted two years ago at Danubiando 2009's white milonga. Those who had been there are still talking about it.
The boat is a restaurant, bar and party place with a stunning view of Budapest. The wooden floor is covered, but there are open air parts of the boat as well.
Tuesday, 23rd August - Milonga Art's Hall
Dimitris Biskas was our guest during the first Danubiando Festival in 2009 with some other cool tango dancers from Greece. Now he is back to show us his tango DJ-ing skills (he will also perform at the Saturday milonga with the lovely Mariana Patsarika).
The Art's Hall (Műcsarnok) is a regular milonga location in the summertime. The monumental Heroes' Square, the evening lights, the wonderful 19th century building has a special vibe at night. It's always popular with the dancers and with the tourist flocking around the building too...
The Art's Hall is an active meeting point and creative centre for contemporary culture and art inspired by the cultural and social environment. The institution itself was founded in 1877 on the initiative of the Hungarian National Fine Arts Association. The original building was situated at 69–71 Andrássy Street, now home to the University of Fine Arts. The exhibition hall on Heroes’ Square opposite to the Museum of Fine Arts was designed by Albert Schikedanz and erected in 1896.
During the festival you can dance under the colonnade of the building and in the entrance hall under the impressive ceiling frescoes.
The regular host-DJ of the Art's Hall milongas is Gabor Novak. He plays a mixture of popular traditional tangos and some alternative music.
Wednesday, 24th August - Milonga de los Angeles
Anne-Sophie Ville is no stranger to Budapest: she was here during Danubiando 2010 and she came back to teach and DJ several times since. She is going to play mostly golden age tangos for us this evening.
When the first bridge, the Chain Bridge, was being built across the Danube between Buda and Pest from 1840 to 1849, Scottish chief engineer Adam Clark requested English language church services to be held for his workers and their families. In 1841 the Church of Scotland sent its first three ministers to Budapest with a commission to establish an English-speaking church, to reach out to the city’s Jewish population, to work with local protestant churches and to help the poor. Nowadays the St. Columba's Scottish Presbyterian Church is located downtown Budapest.
Milonga de los Angeles, because this milonga has a special theme: angels. Hence the dress code: white and chaste. We don't expect you to bring your wings on an intercontinental flight but if you can... As we had a great Halloween Milonga here last year, we need to keep forces in balance.
For a Scottish Church the fitting catering is by the kitchen and bar of the Caledonia Scottish Pub & Restaurant. Manager Zsuzsa Bozó is a tango enthusiast who surprises us every time by interesting food, wines, ciders, cocktails, simply put she always has something special up her sleeve for every tango event.Address: St Columba's 51 Vorosmarty str. 6th district
Tango Harmony was one of the first tango orchestras in Hungary. The band formed in 1998 primarily to play the music of Astor Piazzolla, which gradually changed as the tango community around them grown out of its infancy. They usually perform for tango perfomances and concerts (Troilo, Pugliese) but recently they started playing for milongas too. Last year they gave a superb performance during Danubiando at the milonga held at the Paris Grand Emporium.
Thursday, 25th of August - Castle Milonga
Our home grown orquesta típica of 6 musicians and singer Julian Ingram (almost all of them tango dancers, tango teachers) was an overnight success after their performance at the Global Milonga in 2008 sharing their music with cities all around the world through the ether. Since then, they played at festivals around Europe with their repertoire ranging from early 30's Canaro to late 60's Pugliese.
Cecilia & Serkan: we saw them separated with other great dancers but now they are coming to Budapest like couple in every meaning. We can't wait to see them dancing together.
Julian Ingram is a world class DJ but we have the luck to have him all year round at our milongas. As the singer and musical director of Orquesta Típica Budapest, he has more knowledge about tango music than anybody we know so closely. He is also going to sing for us with OTB this evening.
The castle district is built within a walled fortress on the Buda side, the old center of the country containing the Royal Castle and plenty of other monarchical functions. Today it is a popular tourist destination and a really posh area to live in (owning an apartment here is like owning a condo in Central Park, New York - costs that much too). The Habsburg Royal Ballroom is situated in the Northern part of the district.
The Habsburg Royal Ballroom is a part of a complex built in the 18th century. Originally used as a church but it was later remodelled to it's present form to host the states parliament, the Habsburg emperors also used the building. There aren't many ballrooms left in Budapest as they had been restructured as offices or apartments during communist times. Those that survived were mostly used as conference rooms in state companies. Today the building complex belongs to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Address: Institute of Sociology 28 Országház str. 1st district Friday, 26th of August - Milonga Attila
Beltango, and the tango life in Belgrade is so connected to Budapest, that sometimes we feel they are just from a city nearby. Beltango is a part of Hungarian tango life for a decade now but they also play at festivals and concerts around the world. Their style spans a great distance in time and space from Canaro to Piazzolla to even modern, and contemporary alternative music such as Hugo Diaz or Haris Alexiou.
Ismael Ludman and Maria Mondino has grown to be as great performers as they are subtle teachers and simply charming people. We love their subtle but mature dancing style, their natural kindness to everybody and their unwaning energy. Last year they had been with us all week, every milonga, every afterparty, even after teaching and performing.
Horacio Godoy as a DJ, it has to be good. The DJ & owner of La Viruta is a class of his own.
We have a suprise guest, VJ Pierre_M (FR), who's going to perform his video magic during the milonga!Click to see the promotional video he made for us! Location address: AJAMK (Angyalföldi József Attila Művelődési Központ) 4. József Attila square 13th district
Our Northern neighbours in Slovakia started tango with playing mostly Piazzolla as many other musicians in Europe. However, they fell in love with the real tango, which, coupled with their rigorous academic training and their diverse interests, created a mix dancers love: golden age music with a contemporary energy. This is their first performance in Budapest.
Saturday, 27th of August - Grand Milonga
The 'Angyalföldi József Attila Művelődési Központ' (AJAMK is the abreviation) is a venerable community house from the beginning of the Cold War, modernized in the 80's, and recently rebuilt to its former communist glory for concerts and theatre. Lots of space, great floor, a taste of residential Budapest still not far from the center.Address: AJAMK (Angyalföldi József Attila Művelődési Központ) 4. József Attila square 13th district
Mariana and Sebastian. You definitely don't want to miss this. Last year, their performance was so hot, the roof caught fire. So we can't go back to that location. :) This time we'll bring waterhoses!
Bernhard Gehberger DJs at festivals, regular milongas and tango marathons throughout Europe. His passion are tangos from the late 1920's to the early 1950's. Carefully selected tangos arranged in tandas – alternatingly playful, melodic, romantic, dramatic, rhythmical and cheerful in character - offer a wide range of music interpretation for non-stop dancing, spiced up by some rare and hard-to-find musical gems that may be unknown, astonishing, weird or funny but always great to dance to.
Mariano Bujacich and his orchestra is playing vocal tangos from the second part of the golden age of tango, which are rarely played by other orchestras today. Mariano is a young musician, band leader and arranger, his orchestra plays regularly at the show in Café Tortoni but also playing at the milongas you know well: Canning, Viruta, Ideal etc. With a new line-up of talented musicians, he introduces a new voice too: Sergio Gobi.
We met them during the first Danubiando festival two years ago. In the meantime they were travelling, learning and performing. Now they live and dance in Paris. Mariana and Dimitris will perform this evening as special guests of the festival.
Sunday, 28th of August - Danube Palace Milonga
The Danube Palace (Duna Palota) was built in the late 19th century as a casino, now a cultural establishment, giving home to several dance companies as well as balls and government functions. Address: Duna Palota 5 Zrínyi str. 5th district
Horacio Godoy and his new dance partner Magdalena Gutierrez is a rather new combination. Horacio's extensive knowledge of music, his experience as a dancer and his creative-explosive style always keeps the public wanting more. Magdalena's background in stage tango shows and her classical training complements Horacio's milonguero flair. Two great dancers on one dancefloor is always good, we are sure they will surprise us with something impressive.
Sebastian is not a DJ. He is a tango connoisseur. He will play his favorites on the last night of the Danubiando 2011 like last year. Come and enjoy Seba's gourmet milonga!
The neo-baroque grand ballroom of the Danube Palace will be a stylish location for the closing event of a tango festival named Danubiando... :D
A Russian orchestra that sounds Argentine when they play tango. They are (in the Carlsberg way) probably the best dance orchestra in Europe. Russian art education is well known around the world. They excel in all art forms but especially music and dancing. The members of this orchestra studied at the most prestigious music conservatoires of Russia, then worked with the Argentine masters of tango, including music enthusiasts Sebastian Arce, Mariano 'Chicho' Frúmboli, Pablo Rodriguez whom are everything but forgiving when it comes to the music they dance to. Soledad Orquesta has one of the richest repertoires in tango, which includes greatest hits from Guardia Vieja passing by the Tango Golden Age and up to the Piazzola Era.
